Updated through Sunday

Freshwater

Largemouth bass: Lake Success busted open last week as bass to 5-8 started smacking crawdads. Lake Perris has been pretty good as fish crash on green or purple plastics, reaction baits, or topwater plugs. At Diamond Valley Lake, anglers who get on the water very early or very late in the day score lots of fish around 3-0 -- best size in Southern California now -- but the midday bite is poor. Lake Castaic has been improving as fish zero in on nightcrawlers, crawdads, plastics, pig and jigs, Senkos, or topwater plugs, especially very early and very late in the day.

Trout: In the Sierra, fish are hitting from Bishop to Bridgeport, and the best action occurs early in the morning for anglers using slow-trolled lures or Power Bait. Lakes in the Bridgeport and Mammoth Lakes areas have been kicking out rainbows to 5-8. In Southern California, anglers using Power Bait, Power Worms, or small lures at Green Valley Lake report fair to good action on trout to 2-8. The fishing at Diamond Valley Lake simply rocks for trollers using three to seven colors of leadcore and Needlefish, while anglers drifting Power Bait have caught lots of fish 2-0 to 5-0. Josh Williams, Riverside, took five fish that totaled 22-4, including a 5-2 fish. Fly anglers have been taking rainbows to 2-8 on dry flies at the Lake Cuyamaca dam.

Striped bass: Wildly fluctuating flows tweaked the bite at the California Aqueduct near Taft. Fish average about 1-0 to 2-0, with a few bigger ones mixed in, for anglers using cut anchovies, lug worms, white Gitzits, Rat-L-Traps and frozen shad. At Lake Pyramid, fish 2-0 to 4-0 have been boiling most mornings in a pretty good bite, though anglers drifting cut anchovies or sardines 35 feet deep have reported the best action. Walter Childers, Los Angeles, took a 9-9 on a drifted anchovy at Pyramid. At Castaic Lake, anglers using cut anchovies or sardines 30 to 100 feet deep have done well for fish to 14-0. Lots of striper action all along the Colorado River. Try cut baits at Mead, Mohave and Havasu; while the Willow Beach stretch has been pretty slow, that didn’t stop Allan Cole, Bullhead City, from taking a 42-0 last week.

Panfish: Lake Lopez is probably the best bet in California now; the lake has been on fire with excellent numbers of big bluegill and redear for anglers using worms or mealworms along the shore. The bluegill bite is not too shabby at San Vicente, Lower Otay and El Capitan. At Diamond Valley and Lake Perris, anglers have taken fish to 2-0 from 20 feet deep in a decent bite. Try mealworms, wax worms, or pieces of nightcrawler, or use those them to spruce up a small mini jig.

Catfish: Hesperia Lake dominates when it comes to big fish and limits of fish. Jeremy Shultz, Summit Valley, landed cats of 31-0, 27-0, 25-8, 25-0 and 20-0 on mackerel and marshmallows from the north shore. Mike Kread, Santa Ana, took a 31-8; Darrel Ogg, Apple Valley, took a 30-0 and a 27-0 from the north shore. Anglers fishing the deep hole off the north shore or Finger Point can fill stringers with fish from 2-0 to 8-0. At Irvine Lake, boat anglers using mackerel or shrimp in the flats, Rocky Point, the boat dock, or Trout Island keep busy on fish 10-0 to 20-0. At the Santa Ana River Lakes, anglers fishing during the day have been taking cats to 10-8 in a pretty good bite, though the night shift is doing better. Lake Poway kicked out some big fish from the buoy line, but action could pick up as fish to 20-0 get planted over the next couple of weeks. Bryan Landhan, Clairemont, took a 22-0 on mackerel. Along the lower Colorado River near Blythe, flatheads to 35-0 have been hitting live goldfish or bluegill in the main river and the backwaters.

Yellowtail: The action has been fair to good from San Diego to Newport Beach as many half-day and three-fourths-day boats report scattered action. The Mission Belle, Seaforth Landing, returned Friday with 38 anglers and 59 yellowtail, 131 calico bass and 190 barracuda. San Clemente Island hosts a good bite as fish to 30-0 smack sardines or surface iron.

Albacore: The bite has surged since last week for fish running 25-0 to 45-0. Best opportunity is aboard the 1 1/2-day and two-day boats, although one-day boats are starting to get on fish. The Grande, Point Loma Sportfishing in San Diego, returned from an overnight trip Saturday night with 100 albacore and 56 yellowtail for 20 anglers. The Tracer, Fisherman’s Landing, had limits of albacore for 10 anglers on Friday and 13 anglers on Saturday. The 14 anglers aboard the Legacy, Redondo Sportfishing, landed 180 albacore and two bluefin on Sunday.

Bass: Sand bass fishing has been excellent all along the coast since the bite broke wide open last weekend. Expect seven to eight fish per rod on the day boats. Most fish seem concentrated off of the Huntington Flats. Fish are hitting plastics or bait near the bottom, and sometimes clear to the surface when the bite really rages. The Premier, Pierpoint Landing, has had limits or near limits for all anglers for the entire week.
