What to expect

Boiling Point is a newsletter for people who care about the environment and climate across California, the American West and the globe. If you’re a hiker or a surfer, if you’re worried about losing your home in a wildfire, or if you just want new reasons to stay hopeful, this newsletter is for you.

Every Tuesday, we’ll walk you through the latest news about rising temperatures, water scarcity, public lands, clean energy and more. And every Thursday, we’ll share new reporting that holds politicians and businesses to account for their role in stemming the climate crisis, and offers reflections on what we can do as individuals to contribute to systemic change.

California is on the leading edge of some of the worst effects of climate change — and some of the most promising solutions. If you want a preview of what the future might look like where you live, Boiling Point should give you a good idea. You can sign up here or at our newsletters center.

Your host

滨’尘 Sammy Roth, The Times’ climate columnist and a veteran newsletter writer.

Sammy Roth
(Kirk McKoy / Los Angeles Times)

For nearly a decade, I’ve focused on telling stories that challenge public officials and energy companies to reduce planet-warming pollution more quickly. I’ve spent time in some of the weirdest and most beautiful parts of California and the American West, from the farm fields of the Imperial Valley to the windswept Wyoming plains. I’ve toured sprawling solar farms, hilltops blanketed with wind turbines and hulking coal-fired power plants.

This isn’t just a job for me. I grew up in Los Angeles and have lived most of my life in Southern California, and my appreciation for our vibrant cities and breathtaking landscapes runs deep. I’ve seen how climate change and environmental degradation can affect this place and its inhabitants. Like many people, I want to contribute to a more sustainable future.

What keeps you up at night, and what gives you hope? I’d love to hear from you. Email me at sammy.roth@latimes.com, or get in touch on Twitter.
